A Hometree of Variable Strokes

Description

THE STORY

For this digital project, an image had to be created using nothing but variable strokes, or lines with variable thickness. In addition to that, a weaving pattern had to be done to meet requirements for the assignments, and using the pathfinder tool in Adobe Illustrator allows for a weaving pattern to be made. When it came time for this project, I had initially thought of something relating to nature, such as a tree. At first, the quick idea sketches did not go too well, so I decided on just simply creating an Aztec warrior headdress with some weaving pattern on the chest armor piece. When I had finished it, it looked way too simple, so I decided to return to that tree idea.

THE PROJECT

The tree I chose is based off of the home tree from the movie Avatar. It may as well be, since there are some banshees flying around it, and the two Na'vi figures walking towards it. The original design was very much like a tribal tattoo, but it was not working too well, so I decided to just bunch together all of the line strokes to form the silhoutte of the tree. I thought it would look terrible, and feel like a cheap way of finishing the project, but it turned out a lot better than the original tribal idea. The tribal decoration on the bottom has the weaving done.

FINAL WORDS

I have plans to expand on this design and have them available in print for sale on a couple websites. The design will be more elaborate that this. Please do not use or distribute.
